Student Technology Services

The Student Technology Services (STS) is a program put on by the Plum Borough Tech Department. This program is completely new to the 2018-2019 school year, and although it does not have a clear agenda as of now, it's variability still has much to offer.
Working for Better Workers
With the rise of technology, some believe that it is taking away from jobs typically handled by humans. However, this is not the case. There are many skills that a computer cannot replicate, and these "soft skills" are what make people invaluable. At the STS, we look to hone soft skills, such as:
  • Organization
  • Communication
  • Ethics
  • Professional attitude
  • Exercising and documenting your thinking process

And, there's an emphasis on building up a usable and working knowledge of technology in topics such as:

  • Network Software
  • Network Hardware
  • Web design
  • Device maintenance

My Story
One of the largest parts of this program is that the students have the ability to pursue their technological interests. For example, I, Lucas Wycich (the author of this article), am going to be given my own web server, and I have to create a website from the ground-up to put onto it. From there, I am tasked with securing the site from malicious attacks and other actions that could jeapordize a system's security (disclaimer that this is on an independent system that is not immediately tied to the district).
The whole reason I am doing this is because I have an interest in pursuing cyber security as a career, and I hope to get the experience that comes with constructing and protecting my own applications to apply in other contexts.
