Athletic Director & Coordinator of Student Activities

The district proudly welcomes Mr. Karpen, who brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the Mustang community. With a Master's Degree in Sports Management and a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Media Arts and Journalism, Mr. Karpen’s diverse background uniquely positions him to lead and enhance our athletic programs.

In his previous role, Mr. Karpen served as the Athletic Director and Transportation Director at the Highlands School District. Before that, he spent three years as an assistant in the Athletic Department at the North Allegheny School District, further honing his leadership skills.

Mr. Karpen is a well-regarded figure in the athletic community, contributing significantly to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (W.P.I.A.L.) as a member of the Baseball Committee and an active leader within the Big 56 Conference. His role as an officer in the Northern Area Athletic Director Association highlights his commitment to understanding and addressing the needs of today’s student-athletes.

As an instructor for Human Kinetics Coach Education and Sports First Aid Education courses, Mr. Karpen demonstrates his dedication to ensuring coaches and athletes are prepared for success on and off the field.

Before transitioning to public education, Mr. Karpen honed his skills as a sports reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Tribune-Review. His journalism roots continue to serve him as he builds strong relationships with media outlets, advocating for the best interests of student-athletes and shining a spotlight on their achievements.

We are excited to have Mr. Karpen as a key part of the Mustang athletics tradition, and we look forward to his leadership in fostering excellence for our students, staff, and community.
