Students at Pivik Elementary School learned the cold hard facts about how Penguins stay warm in Antarctica’s frigid waters. Students learned all about blubber and its insulating properties in a hands-on experiment.
Students learned that blubber is a thick layer of fat found under the skin of animals like whales, seals, and polar bears. It helps them survive in very cold places, like the Arctic or Antarctic. Blubber works like a warm blanket, keeping the animal’s body heat inside so they don’t get too cold in icy water or snowy weather. It also stores energy, like a snack pack, so animals can use it when they don’t have food.
