The HP Help Desk: Creating Pathways for All Students to Learn & Grow

HOLIDAY PARK ELEMENTARY  |  ONE MINUTE READ

The Holiday Park Help Desk is an exciting opportunity for fifth and sixth grade students to learn how to troubleshoot and fix their peers’ devices. Holiday Park Elementary has created an opportunity for our students to get hands-on experience in customer service, project management, technical assistance, cooperation, and collaboration.

The Help Desk targets those students who are interested in computers and learning firsthand how to fix them. An average of 10 students participate in the Help Desk. Throughout the week, Help Desk students loan devices to classmates and teachers who have an issue with their device, document challenges, troubleshoot issues, fix the problem(s), and return devices. Participants are expected to be able to identify daily priorities and work together to resolve technical issues.

The application process kicks off with a student expressing their interest and securing a teacher’s recommendation. The students work under the mentorship and supervision of Ms. Christine Brewer, sixth grade teacher at Holiday Park; Mr. Daniel Lauletta, Director of Technology and Innovation; and Mr. Zachary White, Help Desk Technician.

Mr. Daniel Lauletta said, “Giving students other opportunities is why we're in education. We are to create pathways for all students and their interests. With this program, I am glad I can have the opportunity to reach those students who are interested in computers and hands-on learning.”

The program has had a positive impact on the student participants and the hope is to expand the program to additional buildings. The Help Desk is a space where students can see, firsthand, how theory can meet practice, creating a pathway for them to discover new skills and explore new interests.
