Two Pivik Elementary teachers created a service organization called “Kids that Care” where students in fourth and fifth grades can volunteer to help improve their school and the community. The 25-member group is co-sponsored by Mrs. Melissa Bradfield, Fourth Grade Teacher, and Mrs. Carissa Yuhasz, Third Grade Teacher. They started the organization so kids can learn how to help others, give to important causes, and identify issues that are important to them.

‘Kids that Care’ helped organize the Superhero assembly for Joey Byrnes, the Veteran’s Day assembly, various Make-A-Wish activities, Christmas Caroling at Concordia, a collaboration between the Habitat for Humanity and Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, and the Ronald McDonald House.

Students like third grader Jackson Flanagan are encouraged to share their ideas for giving back. Flanagan suggested ‘Kids that Care’ work with the Ronald McDonald House because his family is very involved with the charity. Jackson thought collecting soda pop tabs to help raise funds for the organization would be a great way to raise money. In fact, Pivik Elementary raised $5,000!

Flanagan says, "I like helping the Ronald McDonald House because you are able to care for sick people by raising money and giving them food and a place to stay."

All funds are distributed directly to the organizations.
