Student Highlight: The Best Buddies Club
BY ALLISON KLINSKY  |  ONE MINUTE READ

Although one of many clubs at the high school, Best Buddies is unique in their mission and what they do. Best Buddies is a nationwide club with local chapters; this year is the second year for the Plum chapter. Plum High School won 2019 High School Chapter of the Year!

This is a wonderful honor. The club aims to allow students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make friends in their school and community. There are eleven one-to-one friendships in the club with over 60 additional members who just attend events.

Peers in one-to-one friendships are required to communicate at least twice per week and hang out outside of school once per month. Through participation in Best Buddies, students are able to improve their public speaking, communication, and self-advocacy skills, as well as participate in inclusive social events. Some events the club has done include organizing a Christmas party, snow tubing, mini golf and laser tag, an Easter lunch, and selling cookies as a fundraiser. Any high school student is able to join Best Buddies, which is run by Mrs. Dessel, Ms. Mendenhall, and Mrs. Pieper.
