Oblock Teachers Team Up to Present at Statewide Conference

A team of teachers and administrators at Oblock Junior High School will team up to present at this year’s Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education (PAMLE), “a voice for professionals, parents, and others interested in the educational and developmental needs of young adolescents (youth 10-15 years f age)”, drawing attention from middle-level schools across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The team of volunteers who will be presenting “From Logged-on and Checked-out to Active and Engaged” include Mrs. Teresa Barker (math teacher); Mrs. Shannon Cecchetti (reading teacher), Mr. Bill Depew (art teacher), Mrs. Nicole Kociela (Spanish teacher), Mr. Bernie Pucka (social studies teacher), Mr. Nate Rebovich (science teacher), Ms. Maria Fajt (Assistant Principal), and Dr. Ashley Boyers (Principal). They will be sharing exemplar practices and strategies that have proved to be successful with Oblock students during remote learning. They will be sharing proven practices that have worked during hybrid/remote learning to prompt student engagement, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and provide a sense of normalcy while keeping students safe. Their submission synopsis: As schools rapidly transitioned to virtual learning during the spring of 2020, educators were faced with many challenges and student engagement was at the forefront. According to a study conducted by the University of Texas at San Antonio, 54% of high school students and 64% of parents of younger students reported a decrease in engagement during virtual learning. Dr. Ashley Boyers and Ms. Maria Fajt are very proud of their entire staff. “They have made significant strides in their instructional practices prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, during the pandemic, our staff members have shined holistically as they have worked tirelessly to ensure our Oblock students are cared for, engaged, and learning. It has truly been amazing to watch the growth and the team approach that has worked to effectively educate our students while our staff has made every effort to provide a sense of normalcy and a safe learning environment for our students.” The 2021 PAMLE Virtual State Conference is on Sunday, February 28, 2021 at 4:00 PM.
