Grade 6 Student Writes First Book, Gets Published

Josh Ingram put his pen to paper and wrote his first book, “Light – A Forgotten Monster,” this past December. The dynamic sixth-grade student, humble at heart and kind in spirit, has captured us all, enticing us to order our copy while the press is hot. Josh likes to write and enjoys setting up stories for his readers. He said his genre of choice is horror stories. Influenced by popular writers like Errol Stine, the author of Goosebumps, Josh likes the fact that he can jump between characters to create good stories. He said this piece of literary work will be part of a complete series of books that he plans to author in years to come. Josh was inspired by his mother (his editor and publisher too) to write his book. She was a participant in an online competition (NaNoWriMo) and her involvement piqued his interest. Josh took the initiative to join in the competition, setting and surpassing his own word-count goal (a 2,500-word surplus) and resulting in completing his book in one month. The book is a short read and centers around a slumber party that goes awry. We are talking about a monster...a monster on attack! I don’t know about you but I think I’ll be careful with listening to friends! English and reading are Josh’s favorite subjects. He found the writing process fun because he could use his imagination and “let the words flow”. Josh wants to be a video game designer, turning some of his stories into a video game. His mother and father are very proud of his accomplishment in writing his first book. Josh says, “I expect to be able to create a two- or three-book series out of this and I am very grateful for the number of sales so far.” Dr. Fran Sciullo, Principal of Holiday Park Elementary, says, “We are very proud of Josh as he has chased his dream of being a writer and put it into action with his first book. It is amazing to think of where he will be with his writing within a few years! Josh is an example of our students at Holiday Park who "work hard, dream big.” The book sells for $5 on Amazon.
