A Plum native is exploring the world of diplomacy through an internship at the United Nations. Charlotte Jones (Plum Senior High School class of 2021), is studying political science and international relations and diplomacy at Long Island University Honors College in Brooklyn, New York. Active in pursuing an area of study, Jones was attending a UN conference, where she was invited to apply for an internship with World Information Transfer, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization in General Consultative Status with the United Nations, promoting environmental health and literacy. Jones explains, “As an intern for WIT, I attend daily United Nations meetings. I am responsible for taking notes on the meeting and transcribing my notes into memos. World Information Transfer publishes a quarterly World Ecology Report where the memos may be included. The goal of WIT is to make the discussions/meeting information more accessible to the general public. WIT was founded by Dr. Christine Durbak following the Chernobyl explosion. It was her mission to make sure that more people could know the truth about situations that have such a significant global impact.”
This opportunity has expanded Jones’ perspective and unfurled opportunities for the future. She shares, “I am beyond excited about this internship because it has opened doors for me that I didn’t know existed. Almost daily I get to sit in on UN Security Council meetings, I get to witness the discussion on pressing issues firsthand. The international political realm is faced with growing instability; WIT allows me to be a part of the discussion on how to combat it. My internship has also allowed me to learn so much, the statements I listen to are not always in line with the values of the United States and its agenda. I have the opportunity to hear different perspectives and opinions on situations, allowing me to have a deeper and more well-rounded understanding.”
After graduation, Jones plans to pursue her Juris Doctorate and is considering a career in international law and foreign service.
