Plum Senior High Students Prepare to Take Center Stage, Virtually

PLUM SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL   |  ONE-MINUTE READ

Plum Senior High School students launch “The Fall Monologue Project,” an innovative way for them to share their artistic talents with a virtual teaching and coaching model, allowing for the exploration of relevant material.

Monologues are dramatic pieces recited by a single performer. The Fall Monologue Project allows for creativity with flexibility and avoids pigeonholing performers into a role from a single author's work. Plum Senior High students were given free reign to find a monologue from any play, movie, or TV show that they enjoyed and truly resonated with them.

One of the main goals and benefits of the Project is its ability to fulfill the requests from colleges, theaters, and commercial agencies for self-tapes rather than in-person auditions. Self-taping is a separate artistic skill set that has been largely overlooked in Arts education. The performers and supporting hands are also not limited to the number of students who can participate by cast size of a play, not to mention the challenges of socially-distant staging.

The student’s response to the new play format has been very positive. Several students were thrilled The Monologue Project was an option this year. Overall, it has been a huge success.

Mr. Mitchell shares, “Watching the students grow as they work on their pieces is absolutely mesmerizing. Every step of the process is my favorite step!”

Mr. Nick Mitchell, has served as the Director of the Fall Plays and Spring Musical for the past five years, mounting full-scale productions for the community. He feels it’s important to continue with an annual performance in some way during our current environment and believes students need healthy and safe outlets that mirror their interests. It’s just as important for the entire student body to be able to safely pursue all interests that complement their academics too.

A special thanks is extended to Mr. Joe Fishell, Plum Senior High School Principal, for ensuring The Monologue Project was placed on the marquee.

Stay tuned for the final piece of The Monologue Project! It will be posted on www.pbsd.net.
