Communications Corner: Continuing To Ask Ourselves

Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed of an America where people would “not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” We have to continuously ask ourselves, where we are on the path to realizing his (and our) dream. Black History Month is a time for everyone to learn more, get involved, and take the path less traveled to create a world where we work together with understanding, compassion, and fortitude, taking steps forward to a more unified nation.

Hello #PlumFamily,

This month, Plum Senior High School started a new organization, The Black Student Union (BSU). The organization focuses on a section of our student population that needs the space and voice to make change, connect, and problem solve. It’s an organization with opportunities for all — for together, we can make a difference.

February 1 marked National Freedom Day. This day celebrates the signing of the 13th Amendment, abolishing slavery in 1865. This was a beginning to the numerous milestones the African American experienced in hopes of obtaining freedom.

The first week of the February was National School Counseling Week (#NSCW21). Our school counselors offer unique contributions to our students and families. They have a strong impact on student achievement and student success. Plum Borough School District’s motto is to exceptionally prepare our students for success. Our school counselors are leaders in the fight for our students to win.

The American Heart Association identified February 5 as Go Red for Women/National Wear Red Day. It’s their signature women’s initiative that spreads awareness about cardiovascular disease, a woman’s greatest health threat. It serves as a launching point to improve the lives of women around the world. #GoRedforWomen

President’s Day is February 15, a federal holiday established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington. It became a part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971, to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Today, it’s viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents!

February uniquely touches on points that affect students’ futures. We are in the trenches working to make their lives better. Let’s keep asking ourselves where we are on the path to realizing the dream — only being judged by the content of our character.
