Special Education (Chapter 14)

Special Education includes the provision of services and supports for students with identified disabilities under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Students may qualify under one of the following disability categories: Autism, Deaf-Blindness, Deafness, Emotional Disturbance, Hearing Impairment, Intellectual Disability, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, Speech or Language Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Visual Impairment.

Special education services include specially designed instruction and related services for students with disabilities who require these supports to access a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). These services are individualized based on student need and are designed to support access to the general education curriculum while promoting academic progress, independence, and participation in school activities.

Consistent with federal and state regulations, the district is committed to educating students in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Whenever appropriate, students with disabilities are educated alongside their non-disabled peers in general education classrooms with the supports and services necessary to help them succeed. Some students may require more intensive supports delivered through specialized programs or settings designed to meet their individual needs.
Parents and guardians are valued partners in the special education process. The district is committed to working collaboratively with families to ensure that each student receives the supports and services needed to achieve meaningful progress and success in school. We believe that open communication, transparency, and strong partnerships between families and school teams are essential to developing educational programs that reflect each student’s unique strengths, needs, and goals.
