Welcome to Plum Borough School District's newsletter, PlumIS. This publication will bring you a bit closer to each of our buildings, highlighting the numerous positive stories that are happening all across the District. We hope you enjoy reading every issue as much as we do creating each issue for you.

Communications Corner: Diversity in Our World, Our District

It was an honor to be part of the Superintendent’s Student Shadow Program, an annual day where each Cabinet member visits one District building to be part of a student’s academic experience. Last year, I visited Mrs. Tysarczy’s 6th grade class at Holiday Park Elementary and, this year, I visited Mrs. Nazak’s second grade class at Center Elementary. Both environments were full of kind students eager to learn.

Julian Bliss masterclass at Plum Senior High School

Local Masterclass Comes to Plum Senior High

 

This week, students at Plum Senior High were invited to attend a masterclass by world-class clarinetist Julian Bliss. It kicked off with a visit to Mrs. Loy’s music class where he gave students a sample of his work. Much to the delight of students, he listened to them perform and not only offered feedback and advice on preparing for solo performances and developing their skills but also helped them understand the importance of hard work, dedication, practice, and bringing passion to the performance, all valuable lessons that they can take with them throughout life.

Pivik Elementary kids help school and community

Pivik Kids Help Their School and Community

Two Pivik Elementary teachers created a service organization called “Kids that Care” where students in fourth and fifth grades can volunteer to help improve their school and the community. The 25-member group is co-sponsored by Mrs. Melissa Bradfield, Fourth Grade Teacher, and Mrs. Carissa Yuhasz, Third Grade Teacher. They started the organization so kids can learn how to help others, give to important causes, and identify issues that are important to them.

Officer Netzloff  explains stop the bleed

Freshmen Learn First-Responder Techniques and Earn National "Stop the Bleed" Certification

Plum Senior High School freshmen participated in training that led to certification to become a type of first responder in life-threatening situations with the Stop the Bleed initiative. The District will be the first in the country to certify all of its high school students, faculty, and staff by 2023.

Plum Senior High Teachers Accepted into Pitt RET Program

Mrs. Jenna Romanelli, Ms. Tamar McPherson, Dr. Shubhada Bhamre, and Miss Alexandra Robert have been accepted into the University of Pittsburgh Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program for this spring and fall.
