The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) recently imposed regulations requiring schools to collect proof that students entering Kindergarten have been tested for lead exposure. Lead is a neurotoxin that can have irreversible effects on your child’s health, IQ & ability to learn. Your child could encounter exposure from many different sources, including the public water supply, as happened in Flint, Michigan. Please remember to ask your Health Care Provider to include the dates of lead testing when completing school forms. If your Kindergarten age child has not previously had lead testing, it is recommended that he or she get tested as soon as possible. The ACHD provides this test to un- or underinsured families. Please refer to the brochure in the Registration Packet, or you may find it posted on the Nursing Services section of the district’s website. For any concerns or questions, please contact your school nurse.
