Any student in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade may choose to study an ORCHESTRAL string instrument as an extension of our music program.  Beginning in 4th grade, students may choose the violin, viola or cello and may choose bass beginning in 5th grade.  At this time, we do not offer guitar, piano or harp in school.

String class is a 30 minute lesson in small groups and occurs outside of the regular classroom.  Students attend weekly lessons on a rotating lesson schedule.  For example:  Week 1 - 9:00 - 9:30; Week 2 - 9:30 - 10:00; Week 3 - 10:00 - 10:30, etc.  With this format, students will not miss the same subject each week.  A typical lesson consists of tuning, warm-up, a new concept or skill, lesson book/orchestra literature and a weekly practice assignment.

Beginning in January or February, after school rehearsals are held to prepare for an evening performance in April on the Plum Sr. High stage.  These rehearsals are typically held after school and occur every third or fourth week during the spring.  The site for string orchestra rehearsals has not yet been determined. Bus transportation is provided from the elementary schools for these rehearsals (if rehearsal is not held at their own school) but parents may also drive their child to rehearsal from their home school, if desired.   If students have other activities (dance, sports, etc.) which conflict with orchestra rehearsals, we will try to work out a compromise of rehearsal time.

Be sure your child has a music stand to use.
